1) Charitable Dispensary

Swami Vivekananda, the world-mover saint of modern India was born in this house on 12 January 1863. The 300-year old original building was the ancestral house of the well-known Datta family of Simulia in north Kolkata to which Swami Vivekananda belonged. The building has been declared a Grade-I Heritage Building by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. After the place came into the possession of Ramakrishna Mission, three more buildings (Social Service Building, Library Building and Research Building) were added with the funds received from the Governments of India and West Bengal. The Ancestral House was consecrated by the then President of the Ramakrishna Mission Swami Ranganathanandaji Maharaj on 26 September 2004, the Cultural Complex was inaugurated by the then President of India Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam on 1 October 2004 and the Research Building was inaugurated by Mr Arjun Singh, the then H.R.D. Minister of India, on 20 July 2005.

Vivekananda Museum/Heritage Building: It is located at the Ancestral House of Swami Vivekananda, which has been restored with the help of Archaeological Survey of India, without making any alteration. It consists of a shrine at the actual birth place of Swami Vivekananda, family shrine of Vireswar Shiva, the Thakur Dalan (family place of worship) and adjoining courtyard, Vivekananda Museum (housing 36 rooms in total used by Swami Vivekananda in his pre-monastic days, his parents, his grandparents, his brothers and sisters).

Since its coming under Ramakrishna Mission, the Heritage Building has been developed into a Museum under the nomenclature of Vivekananda Museum. The Museum is designed to make the visitors aware of different incidents of Swami Vivekananda’s life right from his early boyhood. The Museum has been playing its role to spread value education among the people, especially among the school students, through various incidents of Swamiji’s pre-monastic life, particularly, the incidents occurred in his boyhood. On an average, 40,000 persons visit the Museum annually.

The Dispensary consists of departments for the following: (i) Eye, (ii) ENT, (iii) Diabetes, (iv) Paediatrics, (v) General Medicine (vi) Physiotherapy and (vii) Homoeopathy.

Free Medical Camps (Outstation): We conduct Free Medical Camps in the rural areas belonging to the Sunderban where medical services from Government or Non-government sources hardly reach.

2) Rural Health & Hygiene

Integrated Child Development Services are conducted in the Sunderban areas through Gadadhar Abhyudaya Prakalpa and Vivekananda Swasthya Pariseva Prakalpa, both funded by the Central Government through our Headquarters on the occasion of the 150th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. Under Gadadhar Abhyudaya Prakalpa, 100 children up to the age of 12 years are provided various articles, free of cost, relating to their educational, health & hygiene and sports requirements. Under Vivekananda Swasthya Pariseva Prakalpa, 100 beneficiaries of the above category, including nursing & lactating mothers, are covered. They are given nutritive foods, medicines, vitamins, immunization and other articles for education and health & hygiene.
